Fredericksburg Area Museum Announces Departure of President and CEO Sam McKelvey

Fredericksburg, VA (October 3, 2025) - The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) announces the departure of President/CEO, Sam McKelvey, effective September 26, 2025.

McKelvey has led the museum for more than two years with energy and dedication. Under his leadership, FAM underwent a successful rebranding, implemented free admission for all visitors, and launched the FAM podcast series. He also oversaw new community programs and guided the development of important exhibitions including Living Legacies and African American History in the Fredericksburg Area.

The Board of Directors extends its deepest gratitude to Sam for his vision and service,” said Rhonda Cary Fried, Chair of the Board. “He leaves a lasting legacy of innovation and accessibility at FAM. We wish him continued success as he embarks on his next chapter.”

The Fredericksburg Area Museum remains committed to advancing its mission of preserving and sharing the rich history and culture of the Fredericksburg region.

The FAM Board of Directors has appointed Clarissa Sanders to serve as Acting President while it conducts a national search for new leadership. Sanders, who currently serves as the museum’s Director of Interpretation and Programs, brings more than 15 years of museum experience to the role.
