Statement from the Fredericksburg Area Museum on the IMLS Administrative Leave Announcement

Fredericksburg, VA (April 3, 2025) — We are deeply concerned by the recent announcement placing all Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) staff on administrative leave. IMLS plays a crucial role in supporting museums and libraries across the country, providing essential funding that enhances public access to history, culture, and education.

Public funding for museums is not just an investment in institutions, it is an investment in communities. Museums like FAM rely on this support to preserve local history, develop educational programs, and ensure accessibility for all. The uncertainty surrounding IMLS underscores the urgent need to advocate for sustained public funding that strengthens cultural organizations nationwide.

In the meantime, we hope you consider supporting your local museums and libraries through advocacy, patronage, and funding.

FAM stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the museum and library fields and urge continued support for institutions that connect people to our shared past and inspire future generations.
