Fredericksburg Area Museum Celebrates Women’s History Month with a Dynamic Lineup of Programs
Fredericksburg, VA (March 2025) — This March, the Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month with a series of engaging programs highlighting the resilience, contributions, and lasting impact of women in history—both locally and beyond. Through interactive learning experiences, expert-led discussions, and community gatherings, FAM invites the public to explore the diverse roles women have played throughout history.
From hands-on family activities to thought-provoking discussions and in-depth historical explorations, these programs offer something for everyone. Join us in honoring women’s achievements and legacies through the following programs:
History on Wheels: Women Revolutionaries
When: Saturday, March 8, 10:00am – 11:30am
Where: FAM, 907 Princess Anne Street
About: Bring the whole family to this interactive, bilingual pop-up learning lab in partnership with Spotsylvania County Public Schools! Explore FAM’s exhibits through hands-on activities and gallery guides, as we uncover the stories of local women who made a difference—from the American Revolution to today. Families will also create maps inspired by Gladys West, a local mathematician whose groundbreaking work led to the development of GPS technology.

Where: Central Rappahannock Regional Library Fredericksburg Branch, 1201 Caroline Street
About: Be a part of an exciting discussion panel moderated by Malanna Henderson highlighting the women who made an indelible mark on Fredericksburg history. Through a series of shared stories, expert insights, and personal reflections, we aim to spotlight the women whose contributions have shaped our community and the historic sites we cherish. This program is presented in partnership with the Garri Melchers’ Belmont, George Washington Foundation, James Monroe Museum, and Washington Heritage Museums. About: Since humans first set out exploring the seas, there has been an intense desire to answer the question of “Where am I?” Take a journey through time to explore the events that drove this desire, some of the people involved in creating the answers, and the math and science behind the many strategies for a solution. Learn why women, like mathematician Dr. Gladys West, focused on this question and their efforts to create a solution. Presented by Dr. Alan Dean, Dahlgren Heritage Museum. A Space of Our Own: Black Women in Community
When: Thursday, March 20, 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Where: FAM, 907 Princess Anne Street
About: This monthly program, curated by Dr. Gaila Sims, provides a welcoming space for Black women to share stories, network, and celebrate their legacy in the Fredericksburg area. Light refreshments, craft supplies, and conversation starters will be provided. Attendees are welcome to bring board games, puzzles, books, art-making materials, and snacks, if desired. Dress comfortably and bring your friends! Trusted allies are welcome, but this program prioritizes Black women’s needs and experiences. No registration required. What Remains: Herstory

About: Join FAM’s Collections & Exhibitions Coordinator, Kylie Thomson, as she pulls objects from our collection to explore the diverse roles women have played in our local history. This program shines a light on the often-overlooked contributions of women across different periods and cultures through heirlooms, fashion, and more. These women of history can spark conversation, reflection, and inspire us all.
